Financial Struggles of a College Student

Whether you are already in college or in high school gearing up to start what some say are the best 4 years of your life, the fact is they will also be the 4 most financially stressful years of your life. Even if your parents are paying for tuition, you better start saving now because all those nights out, fun days with friends, and take out meals or trips to chipotle add up quick!

You can work all summer long, 40+ hours a week but that will not necessarily save you from constantly having to monitor your mobile banking app while you try to go get ice cream or see a movie.

So during the school year while you load up on credit hours and can't find the time to work a part time job, don't sweat because here are a few ways you can pull some extra cash in your spare time!

1. Sign up with the Dosh app

Dosh is a cash back app that you can link your credit and/or debit card up to and automatically make money back on participating local and online purchases. Also, for every friend that signs up using your referral link, you instantly get $5 deposited to your account (they are currently offering $10 so act fast!)

2. Sell your old, unwanted items

This may seem like an obvious option, but there are many resources that you can use in order to sell your old items. Nowadays you can sell items locally using Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and many others or you can take your efforts national and use sites such as Amazon, Ebay, or a personal favorite, Decluttr. Decluttr is a company that will buy old unwanted electronics as well as CDs, DVDs, and books (they pay a good price for them too).

I sold my old phone and an old video game and received $270.88 direct deposited to my bank!

3. Donate Plasma

Now before you freak out and think you've now hit a new all time low trying to scrape up a few dollars, this option not only compensates you handsomely for your donation ($50 for each of your first two donations), but also saves lives in the process. Plasma donations are used for research to help people with rare and serious diseases worldwide. In order for plasma research to be successful, a donor needs to give plasma at least twice, so keep that in mind before you go chasing that Ulysses S. Grant... or half a Benjamin Franklin... you get the point. The pay varies from location to location, but many places offer additional incentives such as extra cash for donating twice in one week, or 6 times in a month, or other variations. Point being, you can make pretty good spending money while helping a cause.

4. Online Surveys

I will start off by saying this doesn't make you an overnight millionaire by any means, but if you have some free time why not make some extra money by simply completing surveys for companies. My personal favorite is Opinion Outpost. Every time you reach 100 points, you can cash out for $10 with PayPal or keep saving up points for more money. You can also refer friends for $1 each and earn up to $5.

There are many other options and ways to make money, but these have helped me during my time in college. If you have any other great ideas, share them in the comment section below and stay tuned for more posts!
